Last Saturday saw The Savage Nomads take to the stage at Traitors Gate for what was a Landmark gig for the area! After recently playing gigs such as The Isle of Wight, Tramlines and The Great Escape among others, it was truly amazing to see them playing in Grays on the first night of the Autumn Showcase. Supporting them was the fantastic Figures, consistently and evermore impressive with every performance, they had the rather large crowd eating out of the palm of their hands! Stan Blade did a great job as first support too, kicking off the night with his Essex tales! All in all a packed night of great music and good times…even though the new stage and lighting created a whole new set of jobs for me and my trusty assistant! Great job Tom – many thanks!
That was last week and this week is the first ever ‘Last Stop – Festival’, which was created in collaboration with a collective of local bands in the wake of the Flag Factory festival in Brentwood, planned for the same day, which unfortunately fell through, leaving the bands with a ready crowd and nowhere to play.
The name Last Stop is both a nod to the fact that Grays is the last stop on the Oyster line, which is a great selling point for London audiences, and that it’s likely to be the last music festival of the summer for most people around these here parts. It’s perfect timing though because all the great new music that is emerging from the area desperately needed a platform and a focus point. I think this festival will grow to be something really cool. Bands like Queensburys, Figures, Eden Royals and The Victories are very impressive and are gaining a massive following. I urge everyone to come see them now before they get too big and start charging to get in! The Last Stop Festival is FREE entry, as are all the gigs we have lined up at Traitors Gate.
Also, as part of the festival, Traitors Gate have also built an acoustic buskers stage for the beer garden, which is open to all between 12 noon and 7pm on the day and there is a competition for the best rendition of any classic song from the 1990’s.
So, why not come down and play your version of your favourite 1990s track!
If you’re playing, ask a friend to film your performance, then put it on YouTube and post a link to it on here. The performance with the most YouTube views will be the winner, plus a runner up prize for the best ‘original’ version of the song you’re covering! Prizes will include tickets to go see an act of your choice at a selection of venues to be announced but will likely include our brothers in arms The Amersham Arms in Dalston – another great venue doing amazing things!
Also, do let us all know on here what song you are covering and roughly what time you’d like to play so we can get a line-up on here too! You are welcome to come down and play anyway but we cant guarantee a slot.
For more information, please contact Ian or view the Facebook events page and Twitter feeds for more details.
Also, why not come along to one of the other great FREE gigs going on this Autumn at Traitors Gate – see out line-up for details: including local bluster Pauyl Woodley, who is supporting the Mighty MISS BB next Saturday 25th at Traitors – again FREE ENTRY!
