You would be forgiven for not having heard of the Traitors Gate in Little Thurrock, Grays – it’s not especially well-known outside of the locale. Until recently this little gem of a bar was mostly known for its real ale – brewed by owner Ben Deverell in his local micro-brewery, which now produces quite a bit of the good stuff for a range of local outlets…
…That is until recently, when Ben decided that the music at the venue needed to step up a notch or 10 and drafted in local promoters to run all-things music… In steps Golden Cage Media!
Since taking on the booking, promoting and sound engineering of Traitors Gate, it’s taken on a whole new ethos – that is to mix up emerging artists that are gaining a foothold in the industry with local acts that are also showing promise in order to promote local music as well as showcase the best of emerging UK music.
The aim is to bring big local and regional crowds to watch – and even though the gigs are free! to the public, every single act gets paid, so everyone benefits – local acts get paid to support well-known up and coming artists, helping them save money for new gear and transport, and the headlining artists get paid a London gig price …without having to sell one ticket! This also works out rather nicely for the venue too as you can imagine! So it’s goodbye pay-to-play venues and promoters who dangle the invisible carrot of industry viewing and hello to stress-free, profitable gigs with big crowds and their plethora of social media posts, which then promote all parties concerned even further up the food chain!
So far some of the highlights have been as follows:
Dave Woodcock – signed to Blow Up records played songs from recently released his self-titled rebut album, supported by the brilliant Velvet Rose.
Laburnum – signed to Sky, supported by local Grays band Finding Miranda. Laburnum are back on 7th August – not one to miss as at the last gig it was truly spectacular to watch them own the venue and win over the crowd!
Also some of the big name acts booked for the Autumn tour circuit, looks like this:
5th September: Morning Smoke – straight out of Brighton, this band are slowly appearing at all the major cool London venues and are tipped for big things. Take a listen – you won’t be disappointed. Support TBC.
12th September: The Savage Nomads – having played everywhere from the Secret Garden Party to the best spots in London this summer, they’re everyone’s favourite unsigned band including Q magazine. Support will be from from Figures, who took over Traitors Gate on 18th July for the Village beach after party – simply amazeballs! …and Stan Blade, another up and coming local talent who also headlined last Saturday.
16th Oct: Mourning Birds – an amazing new band on all the critics playlist this summer with their self-titled UK album release – a grenade of raw garage and blues. Support TBC.
24th Oct: The Spills – this band are just great – I dare you not to like them! Guaranteed to be a success imho! Support TBC.
27th Nov: Vant (TBC) – another band tipped for big things – and if they’re tour dates for the summer show, they’re definitely making serious in-roads into the industry. Support TBC.
Other rumours of bands potentially playing this year and or spring 2016 include Courts, Asylums & Youth Club, who have all expressed an interest, pending tour schedules and other commitments. Golden Cage Media is working tirelessly to find the newest and best emerging artists as well as the best local and regional talent to support them.
If you are still not convinced, I suggest you head down there and take a listen and look for yourself as the sound system is also worth noting, due to the in-house trained sound engineer. And if you can;t make it down there are also plans to broadcast some shows live online in full digital sound. If you don;t know about this venue now, I guarantee you will be hearing about it soon!
See you there!
