Track leaks….what do these thinly veiled marketing stunts signify about music industry promotion/production models?

The music press is full of news of leaks, deliberate or otherwise and this appears to be something to be concerned about for the artist and fans alike, but how much of this is just marketing in a complex climate of internet promotion? Perhaps this signifies a shift from a top down to a bottom up route for new and established artists to promote their material and, also considering new funding models for emerging artists that circumvent record labels to a growing extent, does this signify the final days of the music industry production model we have had for the last 80+ years?…interestingly the same amount of time it takes for copyright on sound recordings to expire!
